Here at Jaan, we are planning to bring you interviews with prominent members of the Asian community. We have many inividuals and organisations lined up for the hard-hitting Jaan interviews. Based in Agbrigg, the Wakefield Asian Welfare Association was first to be interviewed by Jaan reporters recently when Fida Hussain and Javed Iqbal were put in the hot seat.
We are proud to announce that Nadeem Ahmed, fighting his first election, has won the Wakefield South seat. Nadeem defeated the seasoned politician, Norman Hazell, by a small margin to take the Wakefield South ward. Nadeem Ahmed is believed to be the first Asian to win a council seat in Wakefield. We hope to bring you some facts about Nadeem soon.
Today the College Grove Home Zone was officially opened by Cllr Olivia Rowley in presence of guests and local residents. A statue of the Jolly Pinder, designed by the artist Harry Malkin, was unveiled with fanfare. Cath McDade, Clare Bishop and Christine Westgate from Wakefield MDC were at hand to help unveil the Jolly Pinder. Members of the North Wakefield Community Group, the architects of the Home Zone project, were widely applauded by the local residents on completion of this wonderful project. Young people from Sahara group recently went on a residential visit to Scotland to participate in outdoor activities and to raise awareness within the BME communities of the importance of involving young people in outdoor activities, to develop their self-esteem and learn to take on responsibility at an early age. The residential had an educational aim in that it will encourage the young people to participate in outdoor activities. Young people enjoyed climbing, kayaking, absailing and orienteering. Youngsters learnt life skills, interpersonal skills, team building skills, self-confidence, planning and organisational skills and sense of achievement and fulfilments. The residential was funded by Local Network Children’s Fund. All the staff and young people from Sahara group would like to say a big THANK YOU to Local Network Children’s Fund. The objectives of the Sport 4U group are to associate together with the local statutory authorities, voluntary and local community groups and inhabitants to provide sports and recreational activities and to encourage social and personal skills through building and working together initiatives. The group will work with 8-19 year old age group to provide ‘preventative’ activity, which diverts this group from the possibility of involvement in anti social behaviour. Young people from Sport 4U enjoyed a U13 & U19 charity football tournament at City High Community Sport Centre over the Easter holidays with prizes for the winners. Young people will be participating in a Yorkshire and Regional football tournament on May 6th and May 21st.
Wakefield Islamic Society organised a trip to Manchester during the half term break on Tuesday 18th April 2006 to see the Evening of Inspiration concert at the Bridge Water Hall Arena. Over 30 people. including several children and adults, arrived in Manchester to see Sami Yusuf, Native Deeen, Zain Bikha and many others perform live on stage. It was an amazing evening which everyone, especially children, enjoyed. See the photo album here.

The Unity Cup five-a-side football tournament for 13-18 year olds, organised by Next Generation, will take place at Lightwaves on Friday 14th April. The tournament runs from 11am to 4pm with entry costing £5.00 per team. All money raised will go to the South Asian Earthquake appeal. Download your application/entry form here.
A sports presentation took place at Lightwaves on Saturday 8th April to honour the boys and girls involved in football, cricket and other activities. Young people who attended the Cricket School of Excellence in the preceding 8 weeks were presented with prizes. Young footballers received honours for their recent highs in the league whilst the girls received commendations for their hard work in their activities at Lightwaves with Next Generation. Special guests, the Lord Mayor and Nick Thornicroft, presented the prizes.

A programme of events are planned at City High Community Sports Centre during Easter Holidays for youngsters. Activities planned include badminton, basketball, cricket and football. There is a football tournament in aid of Green Ribbon Week to support the innocent children of war.
A new initiative started by West Yorkshire Police enables local residents to use their postcode to quickly locate their local NPT information page, and even subscribe for free automatic updates via email.
