Casting applications from the Asian community for "Rough Around The Edges", a full length British film (comedy-drama), are invited, with auditions taking place locally throughout August. "Rough Around The Edges" is an exciting project involving local talent and locations, being directed by Jim Dickinson, who has written the acclaimed script. Mannigham Cricket Club in Bradford is hosting a cricket festival to raise money for charity. The main event of the festival will be the match between Mannigham Mills and Pakistan internationals. There will also be music, food and coaching sessions. The event starts at 5:30pm on Friday 20th July 2007.
Our own Tanveer Hussain (pictured right) is embarking on a charity climb in October. Starting October 22nd Tanveer hopes to leave on an expedition to both Everest Base Camp and ascend the nearby mountain of Kala Pattar (5545m) for uninterrupted views of Mt Everest. In the process he hopes to raise much-needed funds for the Wakefield Hospice (a 16-bed in-patient unit providing specialist symptom management and support for local patients and their families facing a terminal illness). He is well on his way to raising his target of £1,000.00 and hopes the generous people of Wakefield will support his venture. The Ansar Organisation are golding their 6th annual Fun & Sports event on Sunday 15th July 2007 between 9:30am and 5:30pm at Birkdale Hight School in Dewsbury. This free entry event will have barbecus, bouncy castle, food stalls, info stall,s bungee run, community stalls, fairgound rides, sports tournaments, cultural exhibitions amongst many other things. This is a mens-only event (the ladies event has already been held).
The Wakefield Mela takes place on Saturday 9th June 2007 at Clarence Park, Wakefield. The mela starts at 11am and goes on until 7pm in the evening. The event is held in celebration of the IIFA Bollywood awards. Great food, music and dance from around the world will be on display in this celebration of South Asian culture with a distinctively Yorkshire Twist.
There is a meeting being held at Horbury Primary school at 7pm on Thursday 24th May 2007 to oppose government proposals for 'privatisation' of education and schools. There are schools in Wakefield which will be affected by this proposal and the meeting will address the concerns.
Two local parent and Toddler groups from different faiths and cultural backgrounds were brought together last week by the ''flying ducks'', Alison Bullivant, Linda king and Shelly King. For the past six weeks Sandal Magna Parent & Toddler group have been working alongside Alison, Linda and Shelly making shadow puppets and other props for a performance about a traditional Pakistani Wedding. Some of the ladies English and Pakistani got together one evening to decorate their hands with Henna and share traditional Pakistani food.
Now in its 4th year, the Evening of Inspiration concerts have evolved into the most popular and prestigious event for millions of UK Muslims. It takes Islamic and cultural entertainment to a new level with world-class production values and dynamic performances presented in a number of venues across the UK. Sahara will open its doors to young people from 17th of April 2007 every Tuesday and Thursday 7pm till 9pm and then also from Saturday 26th of May 10am till 1pm. Young people will have access to games, tv room, homework club, internet cafe and a mentoring room. We will also be taking referrals from other voluntary and statutory organisations and parents to work with those young people who will benefit from one to one mentoring. Advice and information can also be obtained from youth centre and appointments will be offered to young people to discuss various issues they face today in confidence. Sahara Youth Centre is on Chald Lane, off Westgate, Wakefield. This centre is mainly for local youths from Lawfield, Plumpton and Darnley area but young people from others ares are also welcome. If you have any issues and want to speak to us please come to youth centre and ask for Zahid or Sherry who will listen to your problems, help and guide you in the right direction; this process will be in total confidence.
