Toxic Legacy - The GiTMO Effect PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 18 July 2009
CAGEPRISONERS Presents TOXIC LEGACY - The GiTMO Effect Friday 31st July 7-10pm Omar Deghayes (former Guantanamo detainee) Yvonne Ridley (Broadcast Journalist, Cageprisoners Patron) Andy Worthington (Journalist and author of The Guantanamo Files) Wakefield City High School, Warmfield View, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF1 4SF The Guantanamo Bay detention facility has become the most visible symbol of the global 'War on Terror'. In this legal black hole, detainees have been denied their basic rights and humanity and reduced to numbers. Whilst there is hope that this infamous facility will close in the coming year, reports of abuse and hunger strikes surface on a regular basis. More worrying is that other sites like the Bagram facility in Afghanistan still exist, with three times the number of prisoners held therein and with little sign of closing anytime soon. Furthermore, many governments around the world have used the same reasons to justify the curtailing of civil liberties in their own countries including the UK where scores of individuals have been held without trial or charge for up to eight years. Cageprisoners invites you to Toxic Legacy - The Gitmo Effect, for a discussion on the legacy of Guantanamo on the War on Terror. For further information 07807 153 025 /
